Crossing the equator was quite an event onboard the ships and was celebrated with a play where the men (and nurses, if onboard) would dress up as Neptune and all of his court. The first-timers were called "polywogs" and were brought in stocks before Neptune to be judged. It was a lot of fun and my father said at his second crossing he was one of the "guards" who had to present the men before Neptune. He said "everyone" had to participate and would be carried, if necessary. Below are a few of my dad's pictures showing this event. This took place either onboard the USS Relief in 1925 or the USS Iowa in 1936. If you know which crossing these pictures are from, please contact me. click on photo to enlarge
