I am grateful that the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church has microfilmed
so many vital records and made them available through their
Family History Centers. It is mainly from their microfilms and fiche that I have
been able to find so much information.

GERMANY (Many records
filmed by LDS)
The Germans have always been excellent records keepers. The birth records will sometimes list the death
date and place or a note saying the person "left for
America." You must know the "town" where your people
were from if you hope to find them in the records. Of course, the records are written
in German and are easier to read after about 1820. The government
records are easier in most cases to read because the records were standardized
in most cases. The church records are a paragraph or so and the
handwriting can be impossible at times to make out even with the best
examples of German letters/characters.
The German Handwriting Guide that I found most helpful can
be found at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website located at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/rg/guide/Germany17.asp
GREAT BRITAIN (Many
records filmed by LDS with the exception of Ireland)
ENGLAND
The source records in England are very
good and in some cases excellent. The government began record
keeping in 1837 (known as St. Catherine's House Records for where
they were previously stored) and most people complied. Before
that time, it is necessary to not only know where your people
lived, but where they went to church. Parish or church records
are available in most areas back into the 1500's. Quite a few pre
1837 records have been microfilmed by the LDS (Mormon) church and
are available to rent (cost of shipping) at Family History Centers. There are still
some areas that have not been filmed because the local Minister,
etc., would not give permission for filming. Unfortunately, that
has been a problem for me as most of the areas I need are not yet on
film.
IRELAND
Some records are available prior to the
government requirement for registering (about 1863). Unfortunately,
most Parish records were lost in the 1922 Four Courts Fire in
Dublin. Research in Ireland is very difficult because of the lack
of church or Census records. The government is currently
undergoing digitization of the records that are remaining.
Records for an area can be searched for a fee. County Cork, still
uncompleted, is where my Irish ancestors were from and is the
second largest County.
SCOTLAND
The Scottish
Parochial records have been put onto CD and are available at
local Family History Centers. The records are from the 1600s to
about 1856 and include marriages and christenings and births. Dates,
places and parents names, when known, are listed. These records are not complete, but offer the best source of
vital records available for Scotland. The film number for the original records can be
ordered for viewing at local LDS Family History Centers as are available Census records.
It helps if you can read Latin for any Catholic records and other church records
before the 1700's.
There is a wonderful map of Scotland 1641-1892 here .
Choose "Scotland 1641-1892" from British Isles Maps.
GRENADA (All available
records filmed by LDS)
Records for St. George's are very good
and go back to about 1700 or so in English and farther back in
French and Portuguese. Few records exist for St. Patrick's or St.
David's because of a fire that burned most of the records that were being
temporarily stored
at Douglastone Estate.
The LDS filmed all available records
several years ago. The records include government vital records
(births, marriages, deaths), land records (called Indentures),
slave records, and Anglican Parish records (baptism/birth, marriage, death). Most of the records are easy to read, but
there are several years that are so damaged (example) that they cannot be read. Damage was due partly
to the damp climate of the Island, insects, poor storage
conditions and careless handling.
